Knox County, TN

Workshop and Guest House

STATUS

Completed Spring 2023

SUMMARY

A workshop and 2-bedroom guest house.

DETAILS

A retired couple living on a steep wooded site on the Tennessee River found that their hobbies had outgrown their garage and that their guests frequently outnumbered their spare bedrooms. SAA helped them craft a workshop with an apartment above, nestled into the woods up the hill from their main house. The inwardly-focused workshop is built into the hillside, with clerestory windows that provide natural light and glimpses of the surrounding woods. In the second-floor guest house, the mono-pitch roof slopes up towards the river, allowing for a vaulted-ceiling living area with large windows that open to the surrounding tree canopy. A simple materials palette of weathering steel siding, ground face concrete block, and black trim blends with the colors and textures of the natural surroundings.
